There are lots of pirate books out there, what makes the Captain No Beard series unique?

I love pirates. I always have. My first memory of a pirate is of Burt Lancaster in striped pants, flipping acrobatically from mast to mast.

So, when Alexander, my three-year-old grandson and I decided to sail the high seas, we buckled our swashes, placed bandanas on our heads, and shivered our timbers. We traveled the world, fighting sea monsters, trawling the bottom of the ocean, and rescuing each other from the direst circumstances. Aye, me maties, we did it all and the time came for us to record our adventures, and so we did.

How did we choose to relate our tales, you ask? I’ll tell you, my scurvy friend. We told of our fantastical voyages in a great adventure style. Our faces were splashed by huge waves, our clothes drenched by the salty spray. Mermaids danced on our deck, dangerous strangers threatened from our starboard side. We added new crewmembers, learning to not tease them if they were different, and valued the job each and every jack tar did on the Flying Dragon. We gazed at the stars and found the wonders of the earth, enjoying the display of nature’s beautiful bounty. Each voyage is filled with fun and joy, and sometimes a bit of rough seas make us appreciate our safe berth. And then there is the treasure…make sure you notice I say treasure and not plunder, because you see, this crew is a group with a conscious. We be pirates, for sure, but well-mannered ones.

Did we do it in rhyme … you want to know? A resounding “Yo, Ho NO!” It’s a story I’ve told, filled with pirate lingo fun for Mom and Dad as well as their little seafarer listening to their Arrrgh’s and Aye’s.

We have a wonderful crew with a mixture of boys and girls who share the load, because everyone’s knows running a ship can be a chore. After all, we all know being a captain is hard work.

Lastly, the lesson in every book is that you can travel the world, go anywhere, and do great things, all without leaving the comfort of your home. Captain No Beard is proud to admit his greatest treasure is his imagination.
