I have been a fan of author Carole P. Roman for a long time. Though her educational books, she takes kids back in time and around the world, and teaches them what it’s like to be a kid in other eras and places. Carole has recently added a new aspect to her popular If You Were Me… series — space travel! Carole and I recently chatted about her newest book, If You Were Me and Lived on…Mars.

You’ve taken kids around the world and back in time. What made you want to write a book about space?

I love space. I have since I was ten years old and saw my first episode of Star Trek. My grandson and I regularly stargaze. We did last night.

Did you learn anything surprising about Mars or space travel while writing this book?

I learned a lot of surprising things. I learned about the temperature swings, the atmosphere, and the gravity. The fact you have to time your return back to the Earth based on Earth and Mars’ orbits. I enjoyed learning the information.

Do you think Mars will ever be a planet where people can live?

Yes and we will see it probably before the year I projected—2054.

What is next for this series? Can we expect more books about space?

I didn’t plan anything on space. Maybe I’ll dive under the sea…hmmm. Actually Germany was published yesterday. Cuba is in the works.

What is your favorite book that is set in space — fiction or nonfiction?

My son’s series Battle for Darracia. FOR REAL!!  It has everything: romance, adventure, action, and science fiction—it has it all and is done very well.
